Ts’ao Yung-ho was a quiet historian who never took part in political activism, yet his life unfolded amid some of the most turbulent moments in modern Taiwanese history. He lived through the 228 Incident, witnessed the killing of his friend Kuo Hsiu-tsung of the Shilin Mutual Assistance Association, saw the arrest of Peng Ming-min, and watched as books in libraries were repeatedly banned. Although he once chose caution and silence to protect himself, the marks of the White Terror never faded from his life. From a self-taught learner to a leading master of historical studies, Ts’ao’s academic journey was both remarkable and inspiring. Through his integrity, generosity toward younger scholars, and international collaboration, he helped elevate the study of Taiwanese history to a level of global recognition.
